What is a credit lock?
A credit lock is a service that blocks third parties from checking your credit report or credit file held by a credit reporting agency, making it harder to open credit accounts in your name. Since taking out new loans requires creditors to check the applicant’s credit report, locking access to your file at TransUnion with Coveron's Credit Lock feature helps prevent many dangerous consequences of identity theft and fraud.
How does a credit lock work?
When you toggle Credit Lock on in your Coveron dashboard, it notifies our partner TransUnion to block new credit application inquiries into your file. Due to our arrangements with TransUnion, the effect is immediate — your credit report becomes locked from the moment you click the toggle and confirm your choice. And when you want to regain full access back to apply for a mortgage or a credit card, disabling Credit Lock is just as easy and just as fast.
Why do you need a credit lock?
Coveron's Credit Lock feature is an important component in your defenses against identity theft.
If you believe you’re in danger of identity theft (for example, if you reveal sensitive information to scammers online), Coveron's Credit Lock can be used to close off some easy avenues for fraud.
