What is email masking?

Email masking is the practice of replacing your email address with another working address when registering for a website or service. This substitute, sometimes called an email mask, proxy address, or forwarding alias, receives messages and passes them to the user’s actual inbox.

The website only sees the masked address, while your real email address stays hidden from the sender. Using a different masked email address for each online account gives you more control. If your masked email address is found on the dark web, you can disable it without changing your primary email or affecting your other accounts.

How do you mask your email?

There are several ways to hide your primary address. You can create an alias, open a separate account, use a disposable inbox, or generate a forwarding address via an email masking service.

The best option depends on how long you need the address, whether you must reply to messages, and how important the account is. The following approaches cover the most common ways of masking email addresses.

Creating an email alias

An email alias is an extra address linked to your existing mailbox. Messages sent to the alias arrive in your usual inbox, so you can separate different types of email without creating or managing another account.

Some providers let you create completely different aliases. Others support variations of your existing address. You can often choose the alias yourself, though the number of aliases available per user account and the setup options depend on the email service.​

Gmail, for example, allows plus addressing. If your address is [email protected], you may register as [email protected]. You can then create filters for messages sent to that variation. Google recommends this approach for sorting work, newsletter, and shopping emails.

Keep in mind that plus addressing is not full Gmail email masking. Anyone who sees “[email protected]” can easily tell the main address is [email protected]. Some websites also reject addresses with a plus sign.

For better privacy, use a forwarding alias that doesn’t reveal your main username, domain, or other personally identifiable information (PII). It’s useful for newsletters, online shopping, forums, and other accounts you plan to keep using.

Creating a secondary email account

A secondary email account is a separate mailbox reserved for less sensitive sign-ups. You can keep your personal email address for banking, work, healthcare, and messages while using the second account for shopping, competitions, downloads, and newsletters.

This approach is free with many email providers and doesn’t require a specialized masking service. It also creates a stronger separation than Gmail’s plus addressing because the secondary address doesn’t have to resemble your main one.

The main drawback is extra upkeep — you need to check another inbox or configure forwarding. The account also requires its own strong password, recovery information, and multi-factor authentication.

A secondary account is useful when you expect to use the same service repeatedly but don’t want it tied to your main inbox. A secondary account is less convenient than generating a unique mask for every website, and a breach may still expose all services registered with that secondary address.

Creating a temporary email account

A temporary or disposable email service creates an inbox that lasts for a limited period. You can use it to receive a verification message without giving the website an address you intend to keep.

Temporary email addresses are convenient for one-time downloads, short trials, Wi-Fi registrations, or websites you don’t expect to revisit. Some services provide an address immediately without requiring a password or permanent account.

However, disposable addresses are a poor choice for logging in to websites you may need later or for newsletter signups. The inbox may expire, the address may be recycled, and you could lose access to password resets or purchase records. Some websites block known temporary email domains because they’re often used to avoid account restrictions.

Privacy varies between providers, so never use a temporary account for banking, healthcare, government services, paid subscriptions, or accounts with personal information.

Using an email masking service

An email masking service creates substitute addresses that forward messages to your real inbox. You can create a different mask for every website, label each one, pause forwarding, or delete an address that receives unwanted messages. Many paid and free email masking services also offer browser extensions and mobile apps, making it easy to create masked addresses and fill in online forms automatically.

How does email masking work?

Although individual services differ, the general email masking process is straightforward:

  1. You generate a masked address. You create one through an app, a browser extension, a password manager integration, an email provider, or a masking-service dashboard. The masked address may look random or include a label you choose.
  2. You use the mask to register. Instead of entering your real address, you paste the generated address into the website’s sign-up form.
  3. The website sends mail to the mask. Confirmation links, receipts, newsletters, and account notifications go to the masked address stored in the website’s database.
  4. The masking provider receives the incoming message and checks which real inbox is connected to that particular mask.
  5. The message is forwarded to you. You read it in your normal inbox without giving the original sender your real address. Some services also let you reply through the mask, while others support receiving only.

NOTE

Email masking protects one part of your online identity, but it doesn’t make you anonymous. A website may still identify you through your name, delivery address, payment details, phone number, cookies, or browser data.

Email masking example

A masked address works like an intermediary between a website and a person’s inbox. For example, Jane Doe might have an official email address for work or other correspondence but use individual masked email addresses to shop or create accounts on websites or platforms. In the shopping example, her situation might look something like the following.

Jane might make a purchase from an online shop and use the masked email address to receive her invoice and shipping notification. The online shop then stores and sends messages to [email protected]. The masking service receives those messages and forwards them to [email protected].

The shop doesn’t need to know Jane’s real email address. If the masked address is sold to advertisers, included in a breach, or overwhelmed with spam, Jane can disable it. Her main Gmail account continues working as usual.

When should you use email masking?

Knowing how to protect your privacy online starts with limiting how widely you share personal information. Email masking is most useful when you want to prevent your real address from being unnecessarily exposed, tracked, or misused. Common use cases include:

  • Registering on unfamiliar websites. Use a mask when a site requires registration, but you’re not yet confident about its security or privacy practices.
  • Shopping online. A dedicated mask keeps order confirmations and marketing emails separate while limiting how widely your main address is shared.
  • Signing up for subscriptions and newsletters. Create a different email mask for each publisher. 
  • Accessing free trials. A mask reduces the likelihood that promotional messages will continue landing in your main inbox after the trial ends. It doesn’t remove your responsibility to cancel  before you’re charged for the full service.
  • Downloading gated content. Use masking when a website requires an email address before providing a report, template, coupon, or software download.

How to unmask your email

How you unmask an email depends on the method you used.

For a forwarding mask, sign in to the provider’s dashboard and open the address settings. You may be able to view the linked inbox, change the forwarding destination, pause the mask, reactivate it, or delete it.

For a Gmail plus alias such as “[email protected],” just use the original address without the added label. If you created a secondary email account, check its forwarding settings or sign in to that inbox directly.

Temporary addresses are different. Once they expire, are deleted, or are permanently removed, they can’t be recovered. The same applies to permanently deleted masks.

What is the difference between masked emails and email aliases?

A masked email address is a substitute address created to keep a user’s real email address private. An email alias is an additional address linked to an existing inbox. The terms overlap because many masked addresses work as forwarding aliases, but not every alias is designed for privacy.

The main differences are:

  • Privacy. A random masked address reveals little about you. A Gmail alias such as “[email protected]” still exposes the underlying address.
  • Creation. Traditional aliases are created through an email provider, workplace system, or custom domain. Specialized ways to create masked emails include privacy services, browser features, and password manager integrations.

  • Anonymity. Neither guarantees anonymity. A mask hides your email address, but other personal, technical, or payment information can still identify you.
